
A 2009 BMW 320d presented with an intermittent emissions concern. Rather than condemn the diesel particulate filter, we verified the live data across two diagnostic platforms before drawing any conclusion.
The diagnosis
The customer reported an intermittent emissions-related fault while driving. On assessment, there were no warning lights illuminated.

What we found
The scan returned fault code 498E on the DDE — Oil Level Sensor. Live data showed a DPF regeneration had been requested and the regeneration status was active.

What didn’t add up
The pre-filter exhaust temperature displayed as approximately -40.04°C, and an initial scan showed exhaust gas pressure around 336.31 mbar — figures treated with caution and verified rather than taken at face value.

A second diagnostic platform was used to verify DPF pressure. The verified DPF pressure was approximately 15.97 mbar. The DPF was not confirmed to be physically restricted.

What this means for owners
An emissions or DPF warning doesn’t automatically mean the filter is blocked. As this repair shows, a hard engine-management fault can stop the DPF regeneration cycle completing even when the filter itself is fine. Verifying the actual DPF pressure before condemning the filter can avoid an unnecessary replacement.
